This month's Visiting Teaching message centers around the Purpose of the Relief Society. The Relief Society was organized to help women lift and support each other both temporally and spiritually.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I love that instinctively, the women of the church in Nauvoo gathered together to try to do good. It's even better, and more inspired that at that point, the Prophet Joseph Smith realized that something had been missing from the Church organization, and that the women needed to be officially organized under the pattern of the priesthood.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Relief Society--organized under the power of the priesthood--was "something better" than just a club of ladies meeting together, it was a necessary step in the progression of the Church.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Not only was the Relief Society organization "something better", but the sisters who belong to it are, and strive to be "something better".</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
January seems to be the month where I focus on "something better" for myself and my family. We set goals and try to realize our hopes and dreams. Some of our goals are centered on being "something better" for the Lord.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Elder Richard G. Scott said that a Christ-centered home "provides the greatest assurance for peace and refuge in our homes."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The world is a crazy place and I peace and refuge are something that I desperately need. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm so grateful for the comfort that this knowledge brings to me and my family.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0lptedj8F_UvJdRlhrEyDA78rmVzDTXTX-npxwr8bITUBlb3fUPAOYozBhPbW-iWqo_bFvc7jAqjT-9D9DHBkBtpdYZefMZmc82hbSgmkFx8B4G3BpOO-NNlStdD4QyZQf_YYmREnd5U/s1600/20161221_093237.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0lptedj8F_UvJdRlhrEyDA78rmVzDTXTX-npxwr8bITUBlb3fUPAOYozBhPbW-iWqo_bFvc7jAqjT-9D9DHBkBtpdYZefMZmc82hbSgmkFx8B4G3BpOO-NNlStdD4QyZQf_YYmREnd5U/s640/20161221_093237.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<div>
For my handout this month, I wanted to give my sisters a gift along with the message, so I found<a href="http://jenijones.blogspot.com/2015/01/family-proclamation.html?spref=pi"> this cute free printable of The Family: A Proclamation to the World</a> and enlarged it to 16x20 at the print shop, and then framed it, and stuck <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2ObfN8iE6SpZ1RRUEEyemsxc1E/view?usp=sharing">the message</a> to the back. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
Quick and easy, yet meaningful.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and that the coming year is full of peace and happiness.</div>

The ones that are mesmerizing and flash through all ingredients and steps to a recipe in about 30 seconds?</div>
<div>
Well, I saw one the other day from <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Pillsbury/videos/10154339361454563/">Pillsbury</a> that I decided I needed to try and it was super easy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgk6gW7pxByFxc1XMeIuB7QyYRitGpXenHF64oLoh-_Xd7m2PwfrtiQVAn5Xu7OvkwO3jcGZYLsr_A_WX2Ta-36a08_Ybrj3GItoEda2giVUakVV7qB0Apdyf9cqTXnbfNgsrl8zc4M45c/s1600/20161205_092644.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgk6gW7pxByFxc1XMeIuB7QyYRitGpXenHF64oLoh-_Xd7m2PwfrtiQVAn5Xu7OvkwO3jcGZYLsr_A_WX2Ta-36a08_Ybrj3GItoEda2giVUakVV7qB0Apdyf9cqTXnbfNgsrl8zc4M45c/s640/20161205_092644.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
All you need is some chocolate chip cookie dough, pecan chips, 12ish caramels, chocolate chips, and sea salt.</div>
<div>
First, take the dough and shape into balls, and then roll in pecan chips (or not if you don't like nuts). Bake according to package directions and let them cool for a few minutes. </div>
<div>
Meanwhile, melt your caramels in the microwave with a little milk or cream for about one minute, then take a few chocolate chips and melt them in the microwave. Indent the center of the cookie and fill with melted caramel. Then drizzle melted chocolate on top and sprinkle sea salt. Stick them in the fridge for a few minutes to set and you have a fancy, schmancy super yummy, semi-homemade treat!</div>
<div>
Happy mmmonday!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<br />
<div>
So I thought I would take a minute and catch up. We won't go back too far, but just in this year alone we have taken a few trips, had a few surgeries, our oldest son graduated from high school and left to serve an LDS mission to Spain, and we relocated our family from Lehi, Utah to Rexburg, Idaho in July.</div>
<div>
Most of my time since then has included getting the kids settled in their new schools and activities, exploring our new surroundings, dreaming of fun projects for the new house, painting the new house, and unpacking an <b>endless</b> supply of boxes from our old house.</div>
<div>
We are exhausted, but we are loving our new adventure and are so excited about life.</div>
<div>
My goal is to check in here a little more often.</div>
<div>
I miss interacting with you all and can't wait to share some fun new recipes, travel experiences, and projects. I will continue to do a monthly Visiting Teaching message. You all know that I believe Visiting Teaching is super important. VT Messages are not going away. I also spent the past few years in Young Women and am now serving as the Primary Chorister, so I will be sharing some ideas there. </div>
<div>
Although I am not working as a travel agent anymore, I still love travel and hope to be able to share more travel adventures, and tips and tricks.</div>
<div>
My appreciation for good food is never-ending. I hope you will all continue to join me for mmmonday recipe ideas.</div>
<div>
And you all know that I will be decorating, demo-ing, painting, and glue-gunning. A lot.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For those of you who are still reading, I would love to hear what you would like to see more of. I would love to see your projects and ideas, and if you blog, I would really like to visit.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Also, thanks for your patience as I update the ol' blog. I am learning as I go, and eventually all of the links will be up and running again.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Have a great day, and a wonderful weekend!</div>

<div>
Last month was our annual LDS General Conference, which means that it is time for another batch of Conference Preserves!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Conference Preserves help us to remember the wonderful Spirit that we felt as we listened to General Conference and help us to share those moments with those who may not have been able to watch or listen. <br />
Hello! For those of you still looking for something easy to share with their sisters this month, here's an idea:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvwKcpFJjudyT7KLvsL_ZTngkTrSl8ASXgaYjugT2J63v5JhvYcBB7hEDsoAiZ-0dZdEPKA6aC0GQ3dpmC6D0CTnQh1zLcq3K0hOqG4iqyzCP8vlETPN6wzWWbanJWvAV1aRTpBUx7JvU/s1600/20160826_094612.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvwKcpFJjudyT7KLvsL_ZTngkTrSl8ASXgaYjugT2J63v5JhvYcBB7hEDsoAiZ-0dZdEPKA6aC0GQ3dpmC6D0CTnQh1zLcq3K0hOqG4iqyzCP8vlETPN6wzWWbanJWvAV1aRTpBUx7JvU/s640/20160826_094612.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="text-align: center;">To make the handout, you will need 4 sheets of double-sided 12"x12" cute scrapbook paper (2 of each print), 1 or more Kind brand granola bars and some twine or ribbon.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Cut one of the sheets of scrapbook paper down to 10"x10", vertically fold it in half, and cut down the fold of the paper about 2". Next, cut across so that it looks like this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipUGP-b4XxcpvRzOIQ1VSWunqS3RFE8v6hEEcjI3iCEC-40HYcAvxWMgiKh6yo8l3NOph8bSqSf0edneUrD09NP1KoYBZyOEL6D2W2CUpD5Vm82xB9cuRTdb4_6Mp7CrPWVqdtU4teWyM/s1600/20160827_161745.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipUGP-b4XxcpvRzOIQ1VSWunqS3RFE8v6hEEcjI3iCEC-40HYcAvxWMgiKh6yo8l3NOph8bSqSf0edneUrD09NP1KoYBZyOEL6D2W2CUpD5Vm82xB9cuRTdb4_6Mp7CrPWVqdtU4teWyM/s640/20160827_161745.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
Take another sheet of paper and cut a square that is 10"x4". This will be your bottom pocket. Staple it to the bottom of the first sheet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4bhi9YrPWOJyUJ1WSOLezAcNC8RnGGeWjKyYDsl7RXGlmJDFF1V6MQYgfL6AbCetGerDM_hCV90OA8f-Z734i0mPpT3viFBjpyUMG5XxJJ5yFZmFUfd_uDQwXbhPdvUeis2CjAETanKo/s1600/20160827_162436.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4bhi9YrPWOJyUJ1WSOLezAcNC8RnGGeWjKyYDsl7RXGlmJDFF1V6MQYgfL6AbCetGerDM_hCV90OA8f-Z734i0mPpT3viFBjpyUMG5XxJJ5yFZmFUfd_uDQwXbhPdvUeis2CjAETanKo/s640/20160827_162436.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, take your 3rd and 4th pieces of cute scrapbook paper and cut them down to 8.5"x11", and print the <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2ObfN8iE6SpeHRnMnZiOGZQUWs/view?usp=sharing">message</a> and the <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2ObfN8iE6Spdk9TRENvS3V3OEE/view?usp=sharing">tag</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx4I6H3OoCvy8Ro2Zm129umlRdf3P1BQP_J74PCmsfHKfT8T4zndUAdWZAE8nn5IZmyfHCShLoHyvCygoxFmiKkvvKyXSaVy6176N4FtV9H7moR2FL1omAuIo8Z7aq8dz11HrtXdfQBZE/s1600/20160827_162457.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx4I6H3OoCvy8Ro2Zm129umlRdf3P1BQP_J74PCmsfHKfT8T4zndUAdWZAE8nn5IZmyfHCShLoHyvCygoxFmiKkvvKyXSaVy6176N4FtV9H7moR2FL1omAuIo8Z7aq8dz11HrtXdfQBZE/s640/20160827_162457.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
Wrap it up with some twine or ribbon, and stick your granola bars in the pocket and you're all done!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOMUNTgOGp7Iatl2e5V21wWPSZ2-IMEleJEVlCtMOs0cHm-JhhSa5RPH7kAT8X41ofkJFKMDSwFa7iHiQ5nAhAKx0MgYoQlMV1jmzHmawjn1maEt4Snj5LoFuY59tqoEo2D7B9qkNvHZg/s1600/20160827_162657.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOMUNTgOGp7Iatl2e5V21wWPSZ2-IMEleJEVlCtMOs0cHm-JhhSa5RPH7kAT8X41ofkJFKMDSwFa7iHiQ5nAhAKx0MgYoQlMV1jmzHmawjn1maEt4Snj5LoFuY59tqoEo2D7B9qkNvHZg/s640/20160827_162657.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Happy Visiting Teaching!</span><br />
<br />
P.S. If you don't have time to grab all of those supplies, you could maybe even just print the tag and tie it to the Kind granola bar, and just deliver the message verbally. Or, just visit or call. The most important thing is that we are reaching out to each other and looking after one another.Kathy@mishmashmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14187428351162167912noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2455238193721330863.post-9176983894151540002015-11-06T09:23:00.001-07:002015-11-06T09:25:38.831-07:00November Visiting Teaching Message: Conference Preserves<p>This month for Visiting Teaching, we have the opportunity to look back through the talks from General Conference and remember the words of our leaders. What a wonderful conference it was!</p> <p>For the Visiting Teaching Message this month, I compiled some of my favorite thoughts and quotes from General Conference to share, and preserved them in canning jars. The best part about Conference Preserves is that you can enjoy them every day, and they never go stale or expire.</p> <p>They are best enjoyed immediately—don’t let them sit on the shelf and collect dust!</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-d0zj4vGLdqk/VjzT3TUVEMI/AAAAAAAAHek/z7VMJo1UwEA/s1600-h/20151106_082002%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="20151106_082002[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20151106_082002[1]" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-VprRyiYqing/VjzT35UtA5I/AAAAAAAAHeo/KXdGmM6CTMU/20151106_082002%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="364" height="484"></a>If you would like to make some Conference Preserves for the sisters you visit, you will need some fun paper (two sheets per sister), and an extra for the tag (I used white cardstock). </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8fnia-O6km0/VjzT4bu4_5I/AAAAAAAAHes/vCRNhs0u9hg/s1600-h/20151106_082115%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="20151106_082115[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20151106_082115[1]" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MFSEfiANbIA/VjzT4xRE1jI/AAAAAAAAHe0/Xyii7GJbldY/20151106_082115%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="364" height="484"></a> You can find the quote sheets to print <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2ObfN8iE6SpaDVPQ01UZWNWY1k/view?usp=sharing">here</a>, and <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2ObfN8iE6SpamJ6QXZlb3pCWWc/view?usp=sharing">here</a>, and click <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2ObfN8iE6SpeGhBRTU5YWhaa0k/view?usp=sharing">here</a> for the tag.</p> <p>Another idea would be that if there was a particular talk that you feel inspired to share with your sisters, you could print that talk and put it in the jar with a treat instead.</p> <p>I would encourage each of you to study the talks from October’s General Conference. I know that they are modern-day scripture and that our lives will be better and happier if we read and ponder them.</p> <p>You can find all of the General Conference talks at <a href="https://www.lds.org/?lang=eng">lds.org</a>.</p> <p>Happy Visiting Teaching!</p> Kathy@mishmashmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14187428351162167912noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2455238193721330863.post-65309923194957291732015-10-23T11:23:00.001-06:002015-11-06T09:26:12.744-07:00October Visiting Teaching Message-Divine Attributes of Jesus Christ: Filled With Charity and Love<p>The Guide to the Scriptures defines charity as “the highest, noblest, strongest kind of love”. It is the pure love of Jesus Christ. As we learn of Jesus Christ and strive to become like Him, we will begin to feel His pure love in our lives and be prompted to love and serve others as He would.</p> <p>The Visiting Teaching Message this month discusses charity and love, and how we can exercise those attributes to bring comfort to others.</p> <p>For the handout, I decided to include with the message one of my favorite comfort items—soup. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fF4zpUr-18w/ViptIG7SwqI/AAAAAAAAHd4/4nsEzC3Hs-M/s1600-h/20151023_101947%25255B1%25255D%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="20151023_101947[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20151023_101947[1]" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1niH4LDxSuI/ViptIqFxLII/AAAAAAAAHd8/cANbfdTDaJM/20151023_101947%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="364" height="484"></a>To assemble this handout for your sisters, print <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2ObfN8iE6SpRUVWQnJCLWd1M1k/view?usp=sharing">the message</a> and <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2ObfN8iE6SpaXdyV3FpQnRKTEk/view?usp=sharing">the tag</a>, and affix to some cute fall-y paper.</p> <p>I included a soup mug and wrapped everything in clear wrap for mine, but you can certainly just do soup and the handout if it works best for you. Any soup will do. Homemade, canned, or a dry mix, like mine.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vyk6YoqZTKw/ViptJMqJLtI/AAAAAAAAHeE/CvOgf08ZdNY/s1600-h/20151023_102846%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="20151023_102846[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20151023_102846[1]" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P6_NIFb6N0I/ViptJvY7H4I/AAAAAAAAHeM/kT9F_FEcm30/20151023_102846%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="484"></a> Happy Visiting Teaching!!</p> Kathy@mishmashmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14187428351162167912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2455238193721330863.post-30615125021117965942015-09-14T15:57:00.000-06:002015-11-06T09:26:12.730-07:00Visiting Teaching Message—September 2015 The Divine Attributes of Jesus Christ: Powerful & Full of Glory<p>The Visiting Teaching message this month focuses on the infinite power of God, and how Jesus Christ has that power and uses it to help and bless others.</p> <p>Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead with that power, and created the heavens and the earth with that power. He performed many miracles with that power and endured the pain of Gethsemane and Calvary with that power.</p> <p>When we understand and gain a testimony of this power, our faith will increased and we will have more power in our lives to overcome temptation and we will be “armed with righteousness and with the power of God in great glory” (1 Nephi 14:14).</p> <p>To share this message this month, I created a handout that focuses on gaining power and strength. The way I see it, the only way to gain power and strength is to exercise. Physically, we must exercise our muscles and our determination and our hearts. Spiritually, we must exercise our faith and our charity and our love.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCMj0UTJToSjm_ehoniDfI-7YVXUWDY41aEZyKBzgZZJ_qFUMFYGxHqmqYqzqf776IBX5S80ZTgdnwQO6QKZr1uiY6vLqpCkeLBO67YhGdfTRbBYVc0QuXst-fYFAMJ5yaw63vUgJAjXE/s1600-h/20150908_10151314.jpg"><img title="20150908_101513[1]" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150908_101513[1]" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ucaJvp8d6NQ/Vfdyn-Rny3I/AAAAAAAAHZo/x4gFtokXZbQ/20150908_1015131_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" width="484" height="644"></a></p> <p>To make this handout for the sisters that you visit, you will need to purchase a set of weights for each sister you visit. I used 1 pound weights (because they were the cutest and the least expensive). Who has the time/strength/mental energy/cash flow for that?!</p> <p>Not me.</p> <p>A few days ago, I wandered the aisles at Wal-Mart. My plan was to put together an apple-themed gift basket for each of my three children’s teachers in appreciation for the awesome year that we have had. Apple chocolates, apple flavored beverages, actual apples, mini apple pies….you get the idea. I wandered approximately 10 minutes before I lost all enthusiasm. I had this conversation with myself:</p> <p>“Apples? Do they really like apples?”</p> <p>“I bet they get a ton of apple stuff. They are probably so sick of apple stuff.”</p> <p>“This is going to cost me a fortune”</p> <p>“But they are worth it! They are great teachers!”</p> <p>“When am I going to actually have time to put these together?”</p> <p>So in the end, we went with gift cards. Some may say that is the lazy route, but me? I love a good gift card. Especially to somewhere fun that I normally wouldn’t go unless I had a gift card.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nJoFmwgQZYs/VV9FPHU3OZI/AAAAAAAAHQY/-B0_dGz1o3w/s1600-h/20150522_073346%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="20150522_073346[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150522_073346[1]" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xmMjQtPFqos/VV9FPrRDp2I/AAAAAAAAHQc/jk4Ko98PTNI/20150522_073346%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="484"></a>Packaging these are easy. Just <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2ObfN8iE6SpMmxtR3R1YVZfU28/view?usp=sharing">print my {admittedly cheesy} tag</a>, trim it, and stick the gift card to it. One of my kids wanted the gift card stuck to the front. Either way works just fine. Stick it in a bag if you want. Or not. Extra points if there is ribbon involved in the final product.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ebg8-B_w2Sk/VV9FQD7D5nI/AAAAAAAAHQk/npGHwWeCGLk/s1600-h/20150522_074045%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="20150522_074045[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150522_074045[1]" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-o9OPSav1HKw/VV9FQkh5YBI/AAAAAAAAHQs/fLxZQwxSdoY/20150522_074045%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="484"></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6phOeaQ98dU/VV9FQ2KLk7I/AAAAAAAAHQ0/86AyQ9uu2T8/s1600-h/20150522_074058%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="20150522_074058[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150522_074058[1]" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ELerBj7ZHHI/VV9FRfPSNcI/AAAAAAAAHRA/uKA-Ri81M-Q/20150522_074058%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="484"></a></p> <p>Or you could just do this.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-pl4txvp5_KI/VV9FSGt6R1I/AAAAAAAAHRE/dlSe86wZEd8/s1600-h/20150522_075951%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="20150522_075951[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150522_075951[1]" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-izVIQ9veeQg/VV9FSvcbmeI/AAAAAAAAHRQ/Z9diypr7XNM/20150522_075951%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="484"></a>After a summer of recuperation and lots of shaved ice, I will be ready to endow my kids’ new teachers with the love that they deserve. </p> <p>And I will.</p> <p>Because by the end of next year, we will be lucky to scrape together whatever we can.</p> Kathy@mishmashmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14187428351162167912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2455238193721330863.post-59213032635397592252015-05-21T13:16:00.001-06:002015-11-06T09:26:12.739-07:00Visiting Teaching-May 2015 {Conference Preserves}<p>The conference preserves took a little bit longer to put up this time, so thanks for your patience with me. President Uchtdorf said “Patience is not passive resignation, nor is it failing to act because of our fears. Patience means active waiting and enduring. It means staying with something….even when the desires of our hearts are delayed. Patience is not simply enduring; it is enduring well!”</p> <p>I’m a flower market kind of girl. I love purchasing flowers and arranging beautiful bouquets. I also love seeing flowers blooming in my garden, but can wholly attribute them to my husband and his green thumbs.</p> <p>I have a hard time waiting for the weeks and sometimes months that it takes to plant, fertilize, water and nurture a seed till it blooms. I want it now. </p> <p>Life is like this in so many ways.</p> <p>It’s so hard to wait for big events in our lives, or the things that we want, or answers to our prayers. That is why we need to cultivate patience. We need to realize that the Lord is aware of our needs and wants, and that He knows what is best for us.</p> <p>The best things in life will come to us as we actively wait and endure—not just endure, but endure well.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-GnSfFHa4rkE/VRR05MUQtzI/AAAAAAAAHOg/qyMTTkMQRBY/s1600-h/20150326_145610%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="20150326_145610[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150326_145610[1]" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-aJRSLq5Gvc0/VRR05yCsSzI/AAAAAAAAHOo/zkGxdoqgo8Y/20150326_145610%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="364" height="484"></a>For my sisters this month, I purchased a garden cultivator and some seeds from the Dollar Store. I printed <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2ObfN8iE6SpdTlqb3VSTm13eGM/view?usp=sharing">the message</a> and wrapped it around the box of seeds. I tied some twine around the box and the cultivator and printed the words “cultivate faith” on a garden marker.</p> <p>Happy Visiting Teaching! </p> Kathy@mishmashmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14187428351162167912noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2455238193721330863.post-5255887261588140992015-02-23T04:23:00.001-07:002015-11-06T09:26:42.056-07:00mmmonday! {French Toast with Easy Butter Syrup}<p>Guys. I still love those things, but didn’t realize that what comes with that awesomeness is LOTS of blank wall space.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-8xe4krOLdJk/VOPQGZ5kb9I/AAAAAAAAHKc/805IUl1CRb4/s1600-h/20150129_082200%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="20150129_082200[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150129_082200[1]" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-8XyOQs3NyLY/VOPQG7GpeTI/AAAAAAAAHKg/bdrp70ZmHb4/20150129_082200%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="364" height="484"></a></p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb3n35cm3GTc3iutG4pKhPxX9AjKzXEA8qdas-meGtYAT1az_D3M91CNS3bBbdKfmUDoAjjV2xv_8YgcRppHBAY-DreVeNNj6rRFelCQHtrxSM1-HZzVQeuPNg_06zvMV92fMj2JOiGVw/s1600-h/20150129_082219%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="20150129_082219[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150129_082219[1]" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-dsQHVkpmLJ8/VOPQIo6v4QI/AAAAAAAAHK0/3EJjCnY-egI/20150129_082219%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="484"></a>So I’ve started to try to fill it a little.</p> <p>Last fall, I played with paint and stripes.</p> <p>A few weekends back, we tackled another wall. The bed frame had been in a shed for a couple of years and came complete with dust and spider webs…and two extra boards that the seller’s son thought were part of it. He didn’t want them even if they weren’t part of the bed, so we took them just in case. Turns out, they were not part of the bed frame, but they were kind of cool looking, so I talked my husband into keeping them and more recently, hanging them for me as picture shelves.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-4bYRYmYYAIM/VOPQLirVHyI/AAAAAAAAHLk/p0hnn3U7HVw/s1600-h/20150201_105802%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="20150201_105802[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150201_105802[1]" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-MeuKPrDkaiM/VOPQMeI0K7I/AAAAAAAAHLs/Inyv7Pssu-Y/20150201_105802%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="484"></a>I think they are awesome, and they help me feel like I am making some progress towards filling some of my empty walls.</p> <p>The best part? It was a gift certificate to make some glass flowers at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, Utah . Honestly, I was a little skeptical. I love making things with my hands as much as the next girl, but it was something new, and I’m not really a tchotchke kind of girl. So I put off going to do it for a few weeks, and then I ended up with a job that has taken most of my extra time and energy ever since.</p> <p>I felt guilty about not using the certificate, and had almost forgotten about it completely, when I found it a few days ago. The certificate had long-since expired, but I called Thanksgiving Point anyway and they agreed that I could still come in and use it. So I made an appointment.</p> <p>I arrived and they assigned Vicente to teach me what to do. He was super patient with me as I explained to him that I was a blogger, and this was really cool, and I would be taking lots of pictures. He was actually a little excited by this news and he offered to take my picture during the process. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-M0OJWw_89cw/VNK5SdK3K2I/AAAAAAAAHF4/OuBzs4InFgw/s1600-h/IMG_1795%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1795" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_1795" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-PwCvwRT0whk/VNK5SyXGIjI/AAAAAAAAHGA/R_UZ4KmdBvI/IMG_1795_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="363" height="484"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-WikhdG-grgE/VNK5TWgyFwI/AAAAAAAAHGI/F5MJM3d0XJU/s1600-h/IMG_1797%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1797" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_1797" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-w4wKqSJRSw4/VNK5UIPTGWI/AAAAAAAAHGQ/OsflnwpJy8Q/IMG_1797_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="363" height="484"></a></p> <p>Vicente explained that I should stand behind the line and watch the process first. So I watched as he took a long metal rod and stuck it into a burning hot furnace of molten glass. He told me that they kept the furnace at 2100 degrees, to make the glass workable.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-rNJw3q3VsmE/VNK5UpCKDHI/AAAAAAAAHGY/Fdvo34mU0Pk/s1600-h/IMG_1800%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1800" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_1800" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-ztbuRx3NtKg/VNK5VBAZ9CI/AAAAAAAAHGg/zkypu5MYd0I/IMG_1800_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="363" height="484"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-VAY1KM9GX5Q/VNK5WW9MWHI/AAAAAAAAHGo/KoaPQ2f6SfI/s1600-h/IMG_1802%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1802" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_1802" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-2sbXlGs78r0/VNK5XAfhNXI/AAAAAAAAHGw/tC2Ec2HYHYg/IMG_1802_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="363" height="484"></a></p> <p>Vicente then brought the super hot glass ball on the end of the metal rod over to the workbench near me and showed me what to do to shape the glass and then used a giant pair of tweezers to pull the edges of the glass until it formed a glass flower.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-VvbqQOY-Rws/VNK5Yj59_jI/AAAAAAAAHG4/QjShb9FqXk4/s1600-h/IMG_1805%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1805" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_1805" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-f9Wz6oIVy34/VNK5ZM2kY4I/AAAAAAAAHHA/734trtNZgUw/IMG_1805_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="363" height="484"></a></p> <p>After the demonstration, I chose the colors I wanted my glass flowers to be, and put on my gloves. The trick to keeping the really hot liquid glass on the rod was to keep it spinning, which was harder than it sounds because it’s super hot where you are standing.</p> <p>After getting the right size of glass ball, you take it and roll it into the color pieces on a metal table, and then heat it up again so that it melts, and then roll it again on a clean metal surface. </p> <p>Then it’s time to shape it into a flower. Using the large tweezer tool, I pulled little petals as Vicente turned the rod. (Unfortunately, I couldn’t take pictures of this—and it was the coolest part! You turn the ball, pulling on it till it is shaped like a plate, and then turn and pull with the giant tweezers over and over again.) The glass got harder and harder to pull as he turned and by the third round, I had to use two hands to pull the glass. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-l-wbw0VWO9w/VNK5Z0mFV5I/AAAAAAAAHHI/GPRrANPcIc4/s1600-h/IMG_1808%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1808" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_1808" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-jNbbwaF0AMs/VNK5bciNmvI/AAAAAAAAHHQ/UETMezFHNCc/IMG_1808_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="484" height="484"></a></p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju4ipROd96t46lk2kVCtC6hyphenhyphen8RApuigicJtOGYHjvi1ANCZiC_ZWqtLkV7XA0ZDnPlrJXyH9lK16FX2XIKSBvEIHxpTgnKfeviUZ5mB8wm6HYbNRXQlSWV12PEb9aqUGXCEz2u7clNVlc/s1600-h/IMG_1806%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1806" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_1806" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-FuAr6yrN2fM/VNK5dU2KQ6I/AAAAAAAAHHg/ezFbhQ37RoY/IMG_1806_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="484" height="484"></a>I chose to make flowers that stand up, so that I could place them on a table. After taking down my Christmas decorations, my house seems so dull and lifeless—I just need something green and living. </p> <p>I’m not great with plants. </p> <p>In fact, I’m a potted plant serial killer.</p> <p>But I’ve been trying to be better and have had some success with a few {non-plastic} varieties.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-sRNMKjx7p9c/VMYPTuzn_RI/AAAAAAAAHDw/UDxEb3qqXkQ/s1600-h/20150122_11305013.jpg"><img title="20150122_113050[1]" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150122_113050[1]" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-DBL_kmaHXVA/VMYPUCvZb0I/AAAAAAAAHD0/U1OCG2cCuHw/20150122_1130501_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" width="364" height="484"></a>Now, I don’t know the names of all of these plants, so if anyone out there has a greener thumb than me wants to chime in, that’d be great. I try to steer away from plants that like a lot of attention. Things like water and dusting must be optional to my plants.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-h3i_Omv2yRA/VMYPU-Oh_fI/AAAAAAAAHEA/in02-QS0jp0/s1600-h/20150122_11311613.jpg"><img title="20150122_113116[1]" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150122_113116[1]" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-hH1zCPtWhBc/VMYPVV_F8KI/AAAAAAAAHEI/8wUDK8MQtoI/20150122_1131161_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" width="364" height="484"></a>I found this next one after a trip to Puerto Rico. I know it’s a tropical plant, but folks, it was growing out of the sidewalk. That’s a tough plant. When I came across it at the store when I got home, I decided to give it a try. It has survived a long time {for me} with little to no attention and *ahem* infrequent waterings. </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-QwerW3QFveg/VMYPVzGiLYI/AAAAAAAAHEQ/aj7wPbQfXOI/s1600-h/20150122_11314913.jpg"><img title="20150122_113149[1]" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150122_113149[1]" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-VyomTat1s5c/VMYPWfutpxI/AAAAAAAAHEU/i-EYZgEsII8/20150122_1131491_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" width="364" height="484"></a>It also has spread quite a bit. In fact, about six months ago I gave a piece of it to one of my friends, and it survived the separation. Win. This is what it is called:</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-P7MJPFyuU7o/VMYPW7jDVlI/AAAAAAAAHEg/DzR70R0yBhg/s1600-h/20150122_11344013.jpg"><img title="20150122_113440[1]" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150122_113440[1]" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-aCitIPrcKr4/VMYPXZq6BYI/AAAAAAAAHEo/tGYQapfFBFI/20150122_1134401_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" width="364" height="484"></a>Here’s another pretty tough plant. </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-XH6-1ea-Hyc/VMYPXzyOsLI/AAAAAAAAHEw/7gYDRDQP-nA/s1600-h/20150122_11350613.jpg"><img title="20150122_113506[1]" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150122_113506[1]" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-AyhckVy8mDE/VMYPYfmrIgI/AAAAAAAAHE4/2PPackyO0CE/20150122_1135061_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" width="364" height="484"></a>I had one of these just after I was married and neglected it for a good 6 months to a year before it died. If you take care of this variety, it spreads and gets long vines. My sister-in-law had one once that spread the distance of an entire wall in her family room. </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-53xotS7X2RM/VMYPYwZna4I/AAAAAAAAHFA/fYXrsRpdGoE/s1600-h/20150122_11362413.jpg"><img title="20150122_113624[1]" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150122_113624[1]" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-XduoP6wpydE/VMYPZnjwRZI/AAAAAAAAHFI/OIF9mHyvy0g/20150122_1136241_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" width="364" height="484"></a>This is a newer one to my collection, but seems to be fairly hearty. It went for a long time in a too-small pot, but managed to grow and has recently had it’s six-month birthday. Quite an accomplishment at my house. </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-fxfbYTFTjYM/VMYPafI2s9I/AAAAAAAAHFM/xdBDVcQM52U/s1600-h/20150122_11365013.jpg"><img title="20150122_113650[1]" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150122_113650[1]" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-XWZqHfkr-G8/VMYPa5FGDJI/AAAAAAAAHFY/BOKsKerBw8Y/20150122_1136501_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" width="364" height="484"></a>My husband has an orange tree. Citrus is a little fussier, so I’m not responsible for this one. But it’s pretty nonetheless.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-rH1cGUwLFgU/VMYPbY9l8UI/AAAAAAAAHFg/NVJ55S8wtJ4/s1600-h/20150122_11371013.jpg"><img title="20150122_113710[1]" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150122_113710[1]" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-5sE_UCgWXek/VMYPb8-E3KI/AAAAAAAAHFk/FcvBe4tmYsI/20150122_1137101_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" width="364" height="484"></a>The grand champion at our house, though is this little aloe vera plant. It has survived about 15 years and I don’t think it has been watered more than 20 times. For a while, it was in the bathroom, so maybe the steam was enough for it. It’s a little scraggley, but alive. </p> <p>What are your houseplant secrets? Now that my plants are living long enough to get dusty, I could use some tips on how to clean them…pfft….who am I kidding?!</p> Kathy@mishmashmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14187428351162167912noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2455238193721330863.post-49104744955805293842015-01-22T11:06:00.001-07:002015-11-06T09:26:12.734-07:00January Visiting Teaching Message—The Attributes of Jesus Christ: Obedient Son<p>This month’s lesson is centered on obedience. It reads: </p> <p>“Following Jesus Christ’s example of obedience increases our faith in Him.</p> <p><strong>Our Spiritual growth takes place as we draw close to God</strong> through obedience and invite the power of the Savior’s Atonement into our lives.”</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Z-ADZxfiVLU/VME8HkJH8DI/AAAAAAAAHC4/5a5oT8Gw3r0/s1600-h/20150122_102537%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="20150122_102537[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150122_102537[1]" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-OclJlGjQfME/VME8IC28TEI/AAAAAAAAHC8/ZeW2zCp8N0s/20150122_102537%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="364" height="484"></a> I also love the thought by Elder D. Todd Christofferson that says</p> <p>“As we walk in obedience to the principles and commandments of the gospel of Jesus Christ, we enjoy a continual flow of blessings promised by God in His covenant with us. Those blessings provide the resources we need to act rather than simply be acted upon as we go through life…Obedience gives us greater control over our lives, greater capacity to come and go, to work and create.”</p> <p>The idea that obeying gives us more freedom seems like a paradox, but the reality is that our Heavenly Father knows us. He knows our needs, and our personalities. He has a plan for us that’s better than anything we can do on our own, and if we will just obey Him and draw close to Him, we can become more like Him and do great things.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-oyU-gGtrg6Y/VME8Iqfd1cI/AAAAAAAAHDI/z76TYW6a5k0/s1600-h/20150122_102428%25255B1%25255D%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="20150122_102428[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20150122_102428[1]" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Ld7TzsMrjnc/VME8JJQcRfI/AAAAAAAAHDQ/R5sj6aD7VdU/20150122_102428%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="484"></a>For the Visiting Teaching message this month, I printed <a href="http://https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2ObfN8iE6SpcUtWVWZicWM5SHM/view?usp=sharing">the message</a> on some cute cardstock {there are two per page} and made a little envelope for it by folding some paper and stapling it. They were a really rough cedar and they were faded and didn’t seem to really go with the house. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to stain them darker or paint them white with some molding on the top and the bottom. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-7ufoF7DPv6w/VGy7VXbFr2I/AAAAAAAAGPI/62Q8m-CO8As/s1600-h/IMG_1820%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1820[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_1820[1]" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-n5AXnfh-CF4/VGy7WA7ELQI/AAAAAAAAGPQ/jJiT8kI4Ic4/IMG_1820%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="363" height="484"></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Nd_CQLqqbeA/VGy7W3Cz7KI/AAAAAAAAGSI/7HjfAKIk_R0/s1600-h/IMG_2279%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_2279[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_2279[1]" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-aHREZpP3N2s/VGy7XVHeD8I/AAAAAAAAGSQ/4dV2i6IwQBk/IMG_2279%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="482"></a><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Ydl4bdi-ECM/VGy7Xw-H7xI/AAAAAAAAGPk/Ztn_YfVh6-g/s1600-h/IMG_1825%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1825[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_1825[1]" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-YSm0VPVpMIs/VGy7YpIYT_I/AAAAAAAAGPw/lABVCdr3fj8/IMG_1825%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="363" height="484"></a>In the end, we decided that we wanted to paint them. My awesome husband cut some trim and my kids helped out by sanding, and sanding, and sanding. There were some cracks that needed to be filled, so we used a caulk-type filler for the larger cracks, and then added the trim and painted.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Lv_YCmyfyao/VGy7ZIMBaiI/AAAAAAAAGP4/lb3o3o0O23M/s1600-h/IMG_2274%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_2274[1]" style="border-top: 0px; Lauderdale<p>On our way to Peru last April, we had almost a 12 hour layover in Ft. Lauderdale. We decided to get a car and explore the area. </p> <p>As our flight landed at 6:00 in the morning, the first order of business was breakfast. We love trying local restaurants and dives, and we were frantically hungry when we saw this Waffle House. We don’t have the Waffle House chain in Utah, so we decided to try it. Apparently, there are quite a few of these on the east coast because as we walked inside, there was a sticker on the door that said “location 971”. They cheerfully greeted us and showed us to a table. The Waffle House was not super clean, and the food was far from healthy, but it filled our stomachs.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-knt05qwQr3E/VDQ2EqWPbVI/AAAAAAAAGJo/5owXoaxmS24/s1600-h/20140404_073734%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="20140404_073734" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20140404_073734" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-9pimkhEY-UM/VDQ2FesU-DI/AAAAAAAAGJw/9QsgeYQ5Mkc/20140404_073734_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="364"></a>At breakfast we decided that we were going to take a drive out to the Everglades. The Everglades are about a 45 minute drive from Ft. Lauderdale, and there are alligators there. We don’t have alligators in Utah either, so we loaded into the car.</p> <p>The Fort Lauderdale area is pretty easy to navigate and pretty and green {in the springtime, anyway}. On the way to the Everglades, we drove past the new <a href="http://www.ldschurchtemples.com/fortlauderdale/">Ft. Lauderdale LDS Temple</a>, which was cool. </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-5wmH0-EyvsE/VDQ2FxzA76I/AAAAAAAAGJ0/k7NO7WICz7g/s1600-h/20140404_083008%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="20140404_083008" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20140404_083008" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-ie5TGbI9N-w/VDQ2GZ0rBgI/AAAAAAAAGKA/WwygwH8siL8/20140404_083008_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="364"></a>The Everglades are huge and have a large variety of plant and animal life. Since we were limited in our time, we decided to visit Holiday Park. Holiday Park is the location of the TV show Gator Boys. I haven’t ever seen an episode, but apparently that’s the place.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-mm7ohZXkRjk/VDQ2HKJbrgI/AAAAAAAAGKI/efguWpt1-wQ/s1600-h/fllholidaypark%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="fllholidaypark" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="fllholidaypark" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-cc438a8Tz_Y/VDQ2Hk-u73I/AAAAAAAAGKM/rfxBbMLB74Q/fllholidaypark_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="625" height="484"></a>When we got there, we signed up for an airboat tour and chatted up some retirees who were fishing off the dock.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ManGxb5WS0o/VDQ2IK75fdI/AAAAAAAAGKY/amkYP8dVlgI/s1600-h/20140404_084703%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="20140404_084703" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20140404_084703" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-IY9Os6qlCB4/VDQ2Ikh1p2I/AAAAAAAAGKg/wEz5F2SBWOI/20140404_084703_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="274" height="484"></a>The airboat tour was really cool, and if you go to Holiday Park, it’s worth the money to do. Also cool.</p> <p>After the beach, we found a Cuban restaurant, where the food was just so-so, and then went back to the airport to catch our flight. </p> <p>Despite the food, Ft. Lauderdale was nice. Next trip will include more beach time, a trip to the temple, and more exploring. </p> Kathy@mishmashmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14187428351162167912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2455238193721330863.post-81751470148005339832014-10-06T02:12:00.001-06:002014-10-06T02:17:18.141-06:00October Visiting Teaching Message {The Divine Mission of Jesus Christ: Bread of Life}<p>Our physical bodies need food to survive. We eat breads, fruits and vegetables, meats and dairy, and sometimes treats. When I go for too long without food, I get grumpy and tired, and my body and mind don’t seem to work as well.</p> <p>Our spirits also need food to survive. We read and ponder the scriptures, pray sincerely and attend our meetings. We try to help others and we partake of the sacrament. When I go for too long without spiritual food, I get impatient and apathetic, and my spirit feels far away from home.</p> <p>Jesus Christ is the Bread of Life. We should look to God each day for help, both physically and spiritually. He knows us. He loves us. He wants to help us. He wants us to know Him.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUaF2YxlJQeo9EqdJHm4FTAkrSYlJjb3nLG0ZuLmbSLxOrx2tD1iNjcEnWrHMwmrxUOMNFeBem9ZjD7eafdgbU7L-b6BKgVQkYMmx4UEH6w_XfcRTepC8ArPha7Unfirqne1vXyuG-Mtc/s1600-h/IMG_1975%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1975[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="IMG_1975[1]" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-N5NSAFDvYJQ/VDJO-7qMDwI/AAAAAAAAGJI/KwRBprH_tKQ/IMG_1975%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="482"></a>I once had a wonderful visiting teacher named Margaret. She visited every month without fail and would always come with a thoughtful message. Though we were very different in our day-to-day circumstances, we shared many interests and I loved having her visit and share spiritual bread.</p> <p>Margaret was also an excellent baker, and shared with me her recipe for <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7KGfRiaok1eQ1Q2S29Ya2VxVEk/view?usp=sharing">Rosemary French Bread</a>, which I made for my sisters this month.</p> <p>If you are in a pinch for time this month and can’t take the time to make bread, feel free to purchase a loaf of your favorite bread instead to share with your sisters. </p> <p>Share physical bread <em>and</em> spiritual bread.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-26ahyXu4y4E/VDJO_pp0gvI/AAAAAAAAGJQ/EbppdGUT_iI/s1600-h/IMG_1977%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1977[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_1977[1]" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-WDQJgrmWM7Y/VDJPAA-mCBI/AAAAAAAAGJY/petA2c-m9Ms/IMG_1977%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="363" height="484"></a>I packaged my bread in paper bag, cut in half and tied with twine. I made a little paper pocket to put Margaret’s recipe with <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7KGfRiaok1ecEhFMFBReV9URFE/view?usp=sharing">the message</a>.</p> <p>If you would like to make your own little pocket, just cut a 12x12 inch sheet of cute paper that is printed on both sides in half, so you have two pieces measuring 6x12 inches. Fold one side up and secure with staples. Print the message and the recipe and tuck inside.</p> <p>Happy Visiting Teaching!</p> Kathy@mishmashmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14187428351162167912noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2455238193721330863.post-82570141814311875842014-09-22T11:57:00.001-06:002014-09-22T12:25:58.818-06:00mmmonday {Julie’s Friend Todd’s Chicken Bruschetta}<p>Recently my neighbor Julie shared this amazing recipe with me. This recipe is so great and easy for these last summer/early fall nights that you want an effortless grilled dinner. And it’s so good.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-a4d1E3sho0o/VCBjHQzpZtI/AAAAAAAAGHM/JVArRdc-vvk/s1600-h/IMG_1863%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1863[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="IMG_1863[1]" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/--GGwueMaxU8/VCBjH4Hu70I/AAAAAAAAGHU/b5VQTOdgJ-4/IMG_1863%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="482"></a> </p> <p><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2ObfN8iE6SpT0x1V3JKV29oUWs/edit?usp=sharing"><img title="Recipe-Chicken Bruschetta copy" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="Recipe-Chicken Bruschetta copy" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-aUnplv8dPIg/VCBjIZmHtrI/AAAAAAAAGHc/PwY19CfJx1E/RecipeChickenBruschettacopy4.jpg?imgmax=800" width="625" height="484"></a> <p>Julie says that you can freeze the bruschetta, so that you have it on hand, and also that it’s fun to use on Christmas dishes because of the festive colors. Sometimes, when I make it, I use extra dressing because I love a lot of flavor and I want to make sure all of the chicken gets a good coat. I’ve also used different cheeses like cheddar and colby jack, which are good. Try it tonight!</p> <p>P.S. If you want to print the recipe, simply click on the recipe above.</p> Kathy@mishmashmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14187428351162167912noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2455238193721330863.post-48606805931981995632014-09-11T14:59:00.001-06:002014-09-16T09:32:52.105-06:00September Visiting Teaching Message {The Divine Mission of Jesus Christ: Comforter<p>Sorry to be a little slow getting the message to you this month. Doesn’t time just seem to move faster and faster? </p> <p>The Visiting Teaching message this month continues the focus on Jesus Christ’s Divine Mission and focuses on how He is our Comforter. </p> <p>Because of the Atonement, the Savior knows our pain and sorrow. He knows us. He knows how to comfort us when life gets hard.</p> <p>In John 14:18 it says “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”</p> <p>One of the best things about being a part of the Relief Society is being the Lord’s Hands here on earth. </p> <p>Elaine L. Jack said “In Visiting Teaching we reach out to each other. Hands often speak as voices can’t. A warm embrace conveys volumes. A laugh together unites us. A moment of sharing refreshes our souls. We cannot always lift the burden of one who is troubled, but we can lift her so she can bear it well.”</p> <p>For my sisters this month, I wanted to give them some tokens of comfort.</p> <p>The weather is turning chilly and my wood floors are cold in the mornings. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/--y1A_XGajFY/VBINMXojqWI/AAAAAAAAGGk/Ilg8-dZd4NE/s1600-h/IMG_1786%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1786[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_1786[1]" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-v4nstxi36Ws/VBINMyqhXpI/AAAAAAAAGGs/OokduXCupGU/IMG_1786%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="482"></a>I purchased some cozy socks for my sisters and a packet of hot chocolate and included <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2ObfN8iE6SpWFVIdXE4S1BrYnM/edit?usp=sharing">the message</a> inside. </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-eH1NydM5v0Q/VBINNaMhadI/AAAAAAAAGG0/_TMbA520ARQ/s1600-h/IMG_1788%25255B1%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1788[1]" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="IMG_1788[1]" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-ivp1VJA4e2A/VBINOMcJPoI/AAAAAAAAGG8/cJ92sHr-Ltg/IMG_1788%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="482"></a>So simple.</p> <p>So simple that it made me realize that I can help others with simple actions. </p> <p> I can be the Lord’s hands.</p> <p>Happy Visiting Teaching!</p> Kathy@mishmashmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14187428351162167912noreply@blogger.com3
